Artificial Intelligence in Critical Infrastructure management

With the appearance of Covid-19, many companies have promoted Digital Transformation in their production processes, where Artificial Intelligence will play an essential role. Find out how Artificial Intelligence can help you to optimise the management of your critical infrastructures.

“The great growling engine of change is technology”

Alvin Toffler.

The technological scenario is constantly evolving, presenting continuous challenges that need to be faced in order to improve production processes. With the current competitiveness of companies seeking to improve year after year, technology takes on a major role, finding an answer in what we call in the telecommunications industry ”emerging telecom technologies”.

If we rewind a little, at Atrebo we have been talking about the changes in production process trends. Among all our posts, we highly recommend you to take a look at the article on Change Management or the article on Data Analytics and Business Intelligence. In them you will find detailed information about the importance of implementing these tools in your business projects.

For all these reasons, we bring you the following article where we will talk about artificial AI in critical infrastructure management and the benefits of implementing AI in your management processes.

Contents:

  • What’s AI?
  • AI trends in Critical Infrastructures
  • How is AI used in Critical Infrastructure management?
  • What benefits does AI bring to your organisation?
  • Meet Atrebo’s new alliance: Tower Automation Alliance

What’s AI?

Once the importance of technology in organisations that manage infrastructures has been explained, you may be asking yourself, what is Artificial Intelligence?

The Cambridge Dictionary defines Artificial Intelligence as “the study of how to produce machines that have some of the qualities that the human mind has, such as the ability to understand language, recognize pictures, solve problems, and learn from experience”.

Reading the above definition, we realise that we understand it, but at the same time we can ask ourselves, what is its practical use?

A clear example can be voice recognisers and virtual assistants. Through Artificial Intelligence, virtual assistants can process information through automatisms created to recognise what we say and elaborate a suitable response to offer the best user experience.

Artificial intelligence is used all over the world in different sectors such as retail, banking and finance, healthcare, automation and, of course, Critical infrastructure management.

AI trends in Critical Infrastructures

As a result of the Covid-19 health crises we have experienced, companies have accelerated the digital transformation of all their business structures, and AI was not going to be an exception.

Different tools have grown considerably thanks to AI and, many of them, are a great help for the Critical Infrastructure management in sectors such as telecommunications, energy or Smart Cities.

For asset management, perhaps the most important trend is the process and workflow automation. An example could be the quest to automate the analysis of large amounts of data in order to reduce the time it takes to turn data into information.

Another important trend is predictive modelling, which in the critical infrastructure sector could be translated into the maintenance of predictive infrastructure models. This happens thanks to the constant collection of data where artificial intelligence can be used to establish a predictive management model that will allow us to anticipate any incident and plan its correction.

How is AI used in Critical Infrastructure management?

Artificial Intelligence will change more than just the services behind infrastructure management; the transformation will be even more far-reaching. This transformation will start from the structures themselves. This phenomenon is known as Intelligent Infrastructures.

This aspect will take infrastructure management to another level, as different digital tools will enable comprehensive management of all the elements where the infrastructure will collect and analyse data and intelligently correct its activity, always seeking the best profitability of the asset.

In addition, all the information collected by a smart infrastructure can be transmitted between other smart infrastructures thanks to Internet of things (IoT). This technology allows smart infrastructures to be connected, aiming to unify all the data and information collected in order to find the best action decision.

What benefits does AI bring to your organisation?

It seems clear that after all that has been said, the main benefit of Artificial Intelligence for Critical Infrastructure management companies is learning about their infrastructures in order to find the best performance. In the end, continuous improvement of an asset’s performance always translates into return of investment.

However, what other benefits can we derive from AI?

Currently, AI is widely used in other important aspects such as the search for energy efficiency, failure prediction and maintenance of infrastructures and in cybersecurity aspects.
Thanks to the collection of data and its transformation into information, it is possible to perfectly distribute energy to infrastructures, to anticipate any failure and to plan the maintenance of infrastructures or to anticipate possible cyber-attacks.

Meet Atrebo’s new alliance: Tower Automation Alliance

Atrebo is aware of the importance of technologies in the critical infrastructure sector and of their potential. For this reason, we are always on the lookout for new technological advances that help us to offer our customers the best critical infrastructure management solution on the market.

As a result of this concern for constant improvement, Atrebo founded last year the Tower Automation Alliance. This alliance was created in response to the needs of telecommunications companies seeking to fully digitise and automate their infrastructures. The alliance leverages the technological capabilities of all its partners to develop optimal solutions for telcos and tower companies and their supplier ecosystem.
